Soyo Oka is a composer and arranger based in Japan. She began playing piano at age four and studied music composition at Osaka College of Music before working in music. In 1987, she joined the Nintendo sound team as a composer and worked directly under Shigeru Miyamoto to create some of the most iconic soundtracks from the NES and SNES eras, including to SUPER MARIO KART, PILOTWINGS, SIM CITY, and ICE HOCKEY. She left Nintendo in 1995 to pursue work as a freelance artist, contributing music to numerous games, commercials, and animation projects.
Oka has written a robust collection of original works, including for the GeOnDan "Rare Tracks" and "Game Music Prayer" series, the gliss harmo "CHIPTUNE" series, and most recently, her 2023 original album, LOOP816. As an arranger, Oka has contributed to official arrangement albums for DEATHSMILES, DARIUSBURST, and CASTLEVANIA. She has published several books and articles in magazines and is a frequent lecturer at music programs throughout Japan, including at the SENZOKU GAKUEN COLLEGE OF MUSIC, avex artist academy, Konami School, Shobi University, and Komazawa Women's University.
Soyo Oka is represented by Scarlet Moon Artists outside of Japan and is available for videogame music composition and arrangement commissions. Her iconic work on party games, cozy titles, and retro-styled soundtracks makes her an ideal fit for developers seeking that classic Nintendo charm.
